Trends | Online Shopping in the Philippines
The rapid evolution of e-commerce has significantly reshaped consumer behavior in the Philippines. As online shopping continues to grow, understanding the demographics of shoppers, their engagement levels, and preferred platforms becomes crucial for businesses and analysts alike.
This article will dive into the recent trends in the Philippine online shopping landscape. We will analyze monthly shopping engagement levels, lifestage distribution, and the dominance of key shopping applications. All by using Inquiro’s own Marketscan data of online shopping behavior.
Trends in online shopping usage
An analysis of shopper engagement reveals distinct monthly patterns. This ranking system tags users as ‘Low’, ‘Mid’, or ‘High’ based on their online shopping activity each month.

The ‘High’ engagement segment is the most volatile, peaking at 21% in December, likely driven by holiday shopping. Following this peak, the share of ‘High’ users drops in January and hits its lowest point of the entire period in February at just 9%.
In contrast, the ‘Mid’ and ‘Low’ engagement tiers are remarkably stable, consistently accounting for about 24-26% and 19-23% of users, respectively. The enduring presence of the ‘Low’ and ‘Mid’ tiers, despite fluctuations in ‘High’ tiers, points to a stable demand for online shopping.
Lifestage Distribution of Online Shoppers
An analysis of high-usage online shoppers reveals a remarkably stable distribution across lifestages from July 2024 to May 2025. Among this active group, “Young Adults” (21-28 yo) consistently form the largest segment, typically accounting for 25% to 28% of the total.

Three other segments show significant and similarly stable engagement. “Adults” (29-37 yo), “Middle Aged Adults” (38-51 yo), and “Students” (less than 20 yo) all consistently represent between 21% and 27% of high-usage shoppers each month. “Senior Adults” (more than 52 yo) constitute the smallest, most consistent segment at approximately 7%.
While the total volume of high-usage shoppers spiked in December, the proportional breakdown between the lifestage saw little change. This indicates that while seasonal trends affect overall traffic, the composition of the most engaged online shoppers remains steady throughout the year.
Top 5 Online Shopping App by Usage
The competitive landscape of online shopping apps in the Philippines is heavily dominated by Shopee, which consistently stands as the primary app for over 62% of users each month. From July 2024 to May 2025, its market share remained immense, peaking at 70% in January.

Lazada is the clear second-most dominant app, though its usage saw significant fluctuation. It captured a consistent 12-17% of the market for most of the year but experienced a notable spike to 28% in December. This suggest a successful holiday season campaign.
The combined dominance of these two platforms creates a distinct duopoly. Other apps like Taobao, Alibaba, and Rakuten command much smaller shares, each consistently staying below 5%. Note that apps like Amazon, Temu were not captured. This includes platform integrated shoppping sites like Facebook Marketplace and TiktokShop Nevertheless, the data shows a stable market structure with many small players around Shopee and Lazada.
Conclusion
The Philippine online shopping landscape is defined by a stable, two-player market led by Shopee and Lazada. Meanwhile, user engagement is showing predictable seasonal shifts. Lazada shows a strong holiday campaign relative to other players. These insights are vital for businesses looking to tailor their strategies. Marketers and product managers can track and compare their performance to effectively capture and retain the dynamic Filipino online shopper.
